Ivan Illich coined the term iatrogenic medicine in his book Medical Nemesis: The Expropriation of Health which means that the medical community makes people and societies ill. As doctors are trained and financially supported by the chemical - pharmaceutical industry to never recognize, directly to their patients, illnesses caused by environmental factors, they function as a group to enable environmental polluters and to disable those injured by toxins.

While epidemiological evidence (looking at patterns of disease in populations, i.e. asbestos workers get lung disease) accumulates that links everything from breast cancer to flu symptoms with toxins in the environment, like pesticides, doctors are not generally in the forefront of public forums against these toxins or in protecting their patients by prescribing air and water filters. Real health protection is left to community efforts where people educate themselves and work to protect the foundation that keeps them and their loved ones functional and safe.
